Enzo Le Fée scored the decisive penalty in the second half as Régis Le Bris’ side secured a historic victory in their first Europa League group-stage match.
Sunderland have taken four points from their opening four Premier League fixtures and will now face a Manchester City side that have won all four of their league matches so far this season.
City have also made an impressive start across all competitions, with Enzo Maresca’s side recording victories in the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup.
The Black Cats will therefore face another tough test at the Etihad, but will arrive in Manchester with confidence following Wednesday’s European success.
