The ‘Son of Pele’ looks back on his journey from local schoolboy prospect to first-team favourite, recalls the characters who shaped his career, and explains why his love for the club remains as strong as ever.

For Martin Smith, playing for Sunderland was never simply a career ambition. It was a dream that had been with him for as long as he could remember.

A local lad who had grown up watching his beloved Black Cats from the terraces at Roker Park, Smith turned down approaches from Manchester United and Arsenal to sign for his hometown club as a 14-year-old.

He would go on to make his senior debut shortly before his 19th birthday, beginning a Sunderland career that would see him score important goals, earn international recognition at youth level and experience some of the most memorable years in the club's history.
