Because, not being born on Wearside, let alone smelling Vaux Brewery in my youth, why would I support Sunderland?
Dad, grandad and their forebears had no connection with the town. There is no mining or shipbuilding heritage in the family. Unlike Martin O’Neill, I was not enamoured with Charlie Hurley.
But on moving to Durham, football allegiances were up for grabs. Well, not really, for Grimsby Town still have first place in my affections.
