Régis Le Bris’ side will face eight different opponents during the league phase, with Anderlecht, AZ Alkmaar, Dinamo Zagreb, Lech Poznań, Jagiellonia Białystok, Levski Sofia and Torreense completing a schedule that will take Sunderland to four different countries and bring a host of European clubs to the Stadium of Light.

Yet, from the moment AC Milan were drawn alongside the Black Cats, there was little doubt which fixture would be the topic of conversation.
