THE BIG PREVIEW: SCU Torreense v Sunderland

Sunderland continue their Europa League campaign on Thursday as they travel to Portugal to face SCU Torreense in their first European away fixture for more than 53 years (5.45pm). The Black Cats head to Leiria for their second game of the league phase, at Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa.

The Opposition: SCU Torreense

Torreense head into Thursday’s fixture following a historic season in Portuguese football, having secured their first-ever Taça de Portugal title in May 2026. Luís Tralhão’s side defeated Sporting CP 2-1 after extra time in the final, with a late penalty from Stopira securing a famous victory and qualification for the 2026-27 Europa League league phase.

Their European adventure is particularly unusual, with Torreense competing in Portugal’s second tier, Liga Portugal 2, despite their domestic cup success.

The club, based in Torres Vedras, was founded in 1917 and is known as Os Azuis-Grenás, referring to its traditional blue and maroon colours.
